Massage Therapy

Descriptions of the types of massage we offer followed by practioners biographies are listed below. Click on the underlined link for the providing therapist’s contact information.

Massage is defined as the manipulation of the soft body tissues (muscles, skin, and connective tissue) with the hands, feet, forearms, or tools, to enhance health and wellbeing. Each therapeutic massage is customized to the needs of the client to facilitate pain relief and relaxation. Each massage therapist brings their varied training and experience to the massage, integrating elements of deep tissue, Swedish, myofascial, and more.

Ashiatsu is a barefoot massage that is performed on a massage table.  The massage therapist holds onto parallel bars overhead while applying foot pressure to body.  The broad nature of the foot creates a comfortable deep massage without the sharp pain of an elbow or thumb. Slow gliding strokes are performed over a broad surface area of the body helping to warm, stretch, and elongate the muscles and fascia.  Points along the body are strategically compressed to release muscle tension around the joints and spine increasing mobility.   The ability to use gravity and body weight to apply pressure enables the therapist to go deeper into the tissues.  Depth and pressure can be adjusted to your comfort- this is not a painful technique and can be performed with a light pressure. Ashiatsu is a great modality for people that suffer from chronic pain and tension, postural imbalances, repetitive use injuries, athletes, or those that like deeper work and the technique itself.

During a cupping therapy session the massage therapist applies suction cups to various areas of the body.  While the cup is in place, it stimulates blood flow.  Cupping helps with pain, inflammation, muscle tightness, and detoxification.  Cups can sometimes leave red or purple marks, which indicate stagnation of the area and usually disappear in 3 to 5 days.

Fertility Massage is a type of massage therapy that is specifically targeted to improve the balance of hormones and increase circulation to the reproductive organs. This therapeutic treatment is designed to help individuals who are preparing to conceive naturally with conscious awareness as well as clients using assisted reproductive technology. Fertility massage is also helpful for individuals suffering from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, hormonal imbalances and unexplained infertility.

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese treatment in which the skin is scraped to produce light bruising.  This helps with areas of tightness by creating blood flow and healing in the body.

Kinesiology tape is a special flexible tape that can be placed on the body for a variety of ailments. Three primary functions of kinesiology tape are to queue form, reduce inflammation, and minimize pain.

A massage style native to the Hawaiian islands that uses a flowing rhythmic motion and forearm strokes moving from light to deep pressure to relax muscles and promote a feeling of overall wellbeing. Massage oil is combined with aromatherapy essential oils specially selected for the needs of the client to further the feeling of wellbeing.

In an Orthopedic massage a therapist will utilize a combination of Swedish, deep tissue, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and orthopedic techniques to address an orthopedic condition or injury.  The goal is to restore the function and structures of the muscles and joints by rehabilitating soft tissues. After assessing your individual situation, the therapist will work to release tight muscles, address areas of pain, restore joint mobility and stimulate the tissues to heal. Orthopedic injuries and conditions can be the result of poor work ergonomics, poor posture, contact sports, overuse and repetitive activities.  Conditions include, but are not limited to: tendinitis (tendinosis), plantar fasciitis, nerve compression pathologies such as sciatica and thoracic outlet syndrome, chronic neck or back pain, tennis elbow, and trigger points.  A diagnosis from your physician or physical therapist helps facilitate a better treatment plan for the massage but is not necessary.

Pregnancy (Prenatal) massage is for those wanting the soothing benefits of massage during their healthy pregnancy. Common areas of discomfort during pregnancy such as back pain, leg cramps, headaches, and foot tension are addressed.  Pregnancy massage improves blood flow and lymph circulation helping to reduce swelling in the limbs, while calming the nervous system with long comforting massage strokes. This type of massage is performed while on your side. Great care is taken to ensure your comfort by using cushions to support your body. Postnatal massage is designed to rejuvenate the body after vital energies are lost during labor, and to gently support your recovery.

Crystal singing bowls emit unique, beautiful sounds and elemental, healing vibrations. The body is immersed with a soothing, deeply nourishing vibration that creates serenity and inner balance.  Singing Bowl therapy reconnects us with our true essence.

The focus of this modality is on manipulation of soft tissue to release tension, reduce pain, restore range of motion, prevent injury and promote good muscle conditioning for athletes and non-athletes alike.

Thai massage is sometimes called “lazy man’s yoga”.  It is a combination of passive yoga-like stretches and stimulation of acupressure points, which help to up open the energy lines of the body.  Thai massage is done on a soft Thai mat on the floor while dressed in comfortable yoga clothes. No oil or lotion is used and a session is typically 90 or 120 minutes.  Thai massage creates more flexibility, deep relaxation, increased energy flow and balance in the body.
